Much of Latin America is shaped strongly by Iberian influences. The Spanish and Portuguese exploited these lands for profit, causing havoc among the indeginous people. Although the colonial period is long in the past, the modern day Indigenous peoples still cope with the dangerous effects of resource excavations on what they claim their ancestral territory.
