Encomienda System- In exchange for native labor and tribute, the Spanish Lord would provide protection and education to the native population. In reality, however, the encomienda system was thinly-masked slavery and led to some of the worst horrors of the colonial era.
The system, instituted in 1503, under which a Spanish soldier or colonist was granted a tract of landor a village together with its Indian inhabitants.

Much of Latin America is shaped strongly by Iberian influences. The Spanish and Portuguese exploited these lands for profit, causing havoc among the indeginous people. Although the colonial period is long in the past, the modern day Indigenous peoples still cope with the dangerous effects of resource excavations on what they claim their ancestral territory.
